Not because contractors are slow or scarce, but because the homeowners who get the best results — finished kitchens before the holidays, new bathrooms before school starts — are the ones who start the planning conversations now, not in August when timelines are already tight.

Basement Finishing
A finished basement is one of those projects where, once it's done, you can't imagine having lived without it. A functional lower level — whether it's a family room, a home office, a kids' hangout, or a home gym — adds usable space to your home year-round.
Basement projects tend to have more scheduling flexibility than kitchens and bathrooms because they don't displace you from a critical room. That said, the permitting process (egress windows, framing inspections, electrical and HVAC rough-in) takes time regardless of when you start.
If finishing the basement has been on your list for more than one year, that's usually a sign it's worth making the call. These projects consistently deliver one of the higher returns on investment in home value, and the day-to-day quality of life improvement is immediate.
What Doesn't Need a Head Start
Not everything requires months of lead time. A few categories of work can often be fit into a schedule with shorter runway:
- Flooring — hardwood refinishing, LVP installation, tile replacement. Material lead times are generally short, and a flooring project can often run within weeks of the initial inquiry.
- Carpentry — built-ins, trim work, custom shelving, mudroom lockers. These are skilled-labor intensive but don't have the same material ordering windows as a kitchen.
- Drywall and painting — refreshes, texture repairs, accent walls. Faster to schedule, lower disruption.
- Electrical upgrades — adding circuits, updating a panel, installing dedicated EV charging. Usually permittable and executable within a few weeks.
If your project falls into one of these categories, July is still a good time to reach out — but you have a bit more flexibility than someone planning a full kitchen.
