Choosing the Right Flooring for Minnesota's Harsh Climate

Choosing flooring for a home in Shakopee, Eden Prairie, Prior Lake, or anywhere in the Twin Cities metro is not the same as choosing flooring in Dallas or Phoenix. Our climate presents specific challenges that affect how well different flooring types hold up - and some perfectly good flooring choices for other parts of the country are genuinely bad choices here.

I've installed flooring in hundreds of Minnesota homes and seen the aftermath of choices that didn't account for our climate. Here's what you need to know to make a decision you won't regret.

The Minnesota Climate Challenge

Our climate creates four specific challenges for flooring:

1. Dramatic Humidity Swings

This is the big one. Minnesota's outdoor humidity ranges from very humid (summer) to extremely dry (winter, when your furnace runs constantly and indoor relative humidity can drop to 20–30%). This range - sometimes 40+ percentage points of relative humidity variation over the course of a year - causes natural materials like wood to expand and contract significantly.

Why it matters: Solid hardwood floors can gap in winter as the wood contracts, and cup or buckle in summer as it expands. This is manageable with proper installation practices (adequate expansion gaps, proper acclimation) and maintaining indoor humidity - but it requires attention. Running a whole-home humidifier in winter (keeping indoor RH at 35–45%) significantly reduces seasonal wood movement.

2. Freeze-Thaw Cycles and Moisture Tracking

From November through March, we're constantly tracking moisture, salt, sand, and ice-melt chemicals into our homes. Entryways, mudrooms, and any area near exterior doors take significant abuse.

Why it matters: Materials that are damaged by moisture, salt, or abrasion are poor choices for high-traffic entry areas. Any floor covering in these areas needs to be able to handle water, grit, and salt without staining, swelling, or deteriorating.

3. Sub-Grade Moisture Risk

Minnesota's spring thaw and high water table in certain areas can affect basement floors and first floors over crawl spaces. Sub-grade moisture is a real concern in below-grade spaces.

Why it matters: Solid hardwood should not be installed below grade. Certain LVP products and tiles are the right choices for below-grade applications where moisture could be present.

4. Heavy Use and Long Winters

We spend a lot more time indoors than people in warmer climates. More time indoors means more foot traffic on floors, more wear from indoor shoes, and simply more cumulative use.

Why it matters: Durability matters more in our climate. The cost difference between a high-quality floor with a 50-year lifespan and a budget option with a 15-year lifespan is much more significant when you're multiplying the use by heavy Minnesota winters.

Flooring Options Rated for Minnesota Conditions

Engineered Hardwood: The Smart Wood Choice

If you love the look of real wood flooring - and most people do - engineered hardwood is the smarter choice for Minnesota than solid hardwood in most applications.

Engineered hardwood is real wood: it has a genuine wood veneer on top (typically 2–6mm thick) bonded to a plywood or high-density fiberboard core. The multi-layer construction makes it significantly more dimensionally stable than solid hardwood across humidity changes. It still moves with humidity swings, but much less dramatically.

Best applications: Main floor living areas, bedrooms, dining rooms, and hallways. Can be installed at grade or slightly below grade (unlike solid hardwood, which should only go above grade).

Avoid in: Full bathrooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms, basements where moisture is a concern.

What to look for:

  • Veneer thickness of at least 3mm if you want the option to refinish later
  • Quality plywood core (higher-quality than HDF core for dimensional stability)
  • Aluminum oxide finish for scratch resistance
  • A product tested for formaldehyde emissions (look for CARB Phase 2 or FloorScore certification)

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP): The Minnesota Practical Choice

I've installed more LVP in the past five years than any other flooring type, and there's a strong case for why it's become so dominant in our market.

True waterproofness is LVP's defining advantage for Minnesota homes. It doesn't care about humidity swings, tracked-in moisture, salt water from boots, or the occasional spill that sits for a few hours. It won't swell, cup, warp, or grow mold from moisture exposure.

Best applications: Kitchens, mudrooms, entryways, basements, bathrooms, and whole-home installations where continuity matters more than the specific look of natural wood.

What to look for for Minnesota homes:

  • SPC (stone-plastic composite) core rather than WPC for basement and mudroom applications - SPC is denser and more dimensionally stable; it handles temperature fluctuations in unconditioned spaces better
  • 20-mil wear layer for high-traffic areas and mudrooms (12-mil minimum for main living areas)
  • Attached underlayment - helps with sound transmission between floors
  • Temperature rating - most LVP is rated to about 85°F; some brands (Novacore, COREtec) have higher ratings that matter in rooms with direct sun exposure or heated floors

A note on heated floors: If you're installing LVP over in-floor radiant heat (increasingly common in Minnesota bathrooms and mudrooms), confirm the product is rated for use with radiant heat. Some LVP products expand too much under continuous heating and can buckle.

Porcelain Tile: The Bulletproof Choice

For mudrooms, entryways, laundry rooms, and bathrooms - anywhere you need a floor that handles water and grit without any concern - porcelain tile is the right choice.

Porcelain is impervious to water, extremely durable, and unaffected by Minnesota's humidity swings. It's cold underfoot (a legitimate concern), which is why pairing tile with in-floor radiant heat makes so much sense in our climate.

For Minnesota specifically:

  • Choose a tile with a COF (coefficient of friction) of at least 0.42 for floors - important for safety when wet or when entering from icy/wet conditions outside
  • For mudrooms and entries, consider textured or matte-finish tiles that hide dirt and provide better grip
  • Plan for radiant heat under tile in any room where you'll be barefoot - unheated tile floors are genuinely brutal in January

Solid Hardwood: Beautiful With the Right Expectations

Solid hardwood is still a wonderful flooring choice for Minnesota homes above grade - but it requires managing expectations and taking care of it properly.

The key practices for Minnesota hardwood success:

  1. Acclimate the wood properly before installation - at least 5–7 days in the space where it will be installed, with the home at normal living temperature and humidity
  2. Install with appropriate expansion gaps - critical; every board needs room to expand
  3. Run a whole-home humidifier in winter to keep indoor RH at 35–45%
  4. Never install solid hardwood below grade
  5. Use site-finished hardwood (sanded and finished after installation) rather than pre-finished if you want the finest result - site-finishing fills small gaps and creates a seamless surface

Species that hold up particularly well in our climate include white oak (stable and hard), maple (very hard), and hickory (extremely hard and characterful).

The Humidity Management Investment

If you're installing or maintaining hardwood flooring in a Minnesota home, a whole-home humidifier is one of the best supporting investments you can make. A whole-home bypass or flow-through humidifier installed on your furnace costs $400–$800 to install and can maintain indoor humidity at a consistent level throughout the heating season.

This protects not only your floors, but also wood cabinetry, wood furniture, and the structural woodwork in your home. Dry Minnesota winters are hard on all of it.
