What to know about building a deck in Minnesota:
Frost-line footings are non-negotiable here. Your footings need to go below the frost depth (42–48 inches in the Scott County area) or frost heave will destroy the structure over time. Any contractor who suggests otherwise is cutting corners that will cost you later.
Composite decking — Trex, TimberTech, Azek — has become the dominant choice for new decks in our area. The low maintenance is the main draw: no staining, no sealing, just clean it once or twice a year. Premium composites also hold up extremely well to our UV exposure and temperature extremes.

The honest tradeoff:
A patio gives you more square footage per dollar than a deck, but the connection to your home's interior is less direct. You're also relying on the grade around your home draining well — poor drainage around a patio leads to water management headaches.

Pergolas: Structure and Shade
A pergola changes the feel of an outdoor space in a way that's hard to fully appreciate until you're sitting under one. Pergolas pair well with either decks or patios. They don't provide full rain protection (though adding a polycarbonate or louvered roof panel system gets you closer), but they do cut the intensity of direct afternoon sun significantly.

- Cedar — the traditional choice, beautiful, naturally rot-resistant, requires periodic staining
- Composite — low maintenance, coordinates well with composite decking
- Aluminum — extremely durable, often powder-coated to look like wood, growing in popularity
